Beware of Chinese Domain Registration Scams Targeting Indian Businesses
A New Twist on an Old Scam — Stay Alert!
Recently, our team received a suspicious email from a so-called Chinese domain registrar, claiming that another company was trying to register domain names similar to our brand. At first glance, the message looked urgent and official. But after deeper investigation, we found that this is a widespread scam targeting businesses across India and the globe.
We're sharing our experience here so that you or your business don’t fall victim to this misleading scheme.
Here’s What the Scam Email Looked Like
The email came from:
-
zhihaining@vip.sina.com
-
kevin@cndomain.org.cn
And it said:
Please kindly forward this to your CEO, because this is urgent.
Dear CEO,
We are the domain name registration service company in China. On May 7, 2025, we received an application from Jiahai Ltd requesting to register domain names likecodeshoppy.cn
,codeshoppy.com.cn
,codeshoppy.net.cn
, etc.We found this name conflicts with your company name or trademark.
Please confirm if Jiahai Ltd is your business partner in China. Otherwise, we will allow them to proceed with registration...
This is followed by another fake message that pretends to come from the company "applying" for your domain, creating the illusion of urgency and legitimacy.
What’s the Goal of This Scam?
The scammer's real objective is to:
-
Trick you into panic.
-
Convince you to purchase these domains immediately—but through them, at inflated prices.
-
Possibly phish for your company details, including names, phone numbers, or payment info.
This is not a legitimate domain registration process. Legitimate registrars or ICANN-accredited bodies do not send emails like this, nor do they act as "middlemen" for third-party disputes without proper legal channels.
What Should You Do?
-
Do not reply to the scammer.
-
Mark the email as spam or phishing.
-
Report it to:
-
Report the email sender to their provider:
-
Sina.com (for zhihaining@vip.sina.com): abuse@sina.com.cn
-
-
Inform your team or IT department so they can flag and block future emails from these domains.
How to Identify These Scams
-
Uses scare tactics like “this is urgent” or “another company is trying to steal your brand.”
-
Uses fake names like Kevin Liu, Jiahai Ltd, etc.
-
Offers to “help” you secure the domain—only through their shady service.
-
Domains like
cndomain.org.cn
are not official Chinese registrars.
